Neighborhood Print Studio

A community print studio and business incubator dedicated to fostering creativity, collaboration, and access through the art of printmaking.

MISSION

Our mission is to provide a professional workspace and resources for individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels to explore and engage with various printmaking techniques. We strive to advocate for equitable access to artistic resources, champion diverse voices, and promote creativity as a catalyst for social change and community building.

COMMUNITY PRINT

Through educational workshops, open studio space, collaborative projects, and community events, we aim to empower individuals to express themselves, build connections, and contribute to a thriving artistic ecosystem. We currently have 3 intaglio printing presses  (12 x 18, 24 x 36 and 42 x 60 inches) that have been donated or acquired especially for the Studio.
To artists we offer and facilitate: silkscreening, etching and expanded access to our preexisting print program.

BUSINESS INCUBATOR

The business incubator program supports future, aspiring small publication and printmaking businesses to become fully realized within the creative economy by providing physical space, sharing resources and skills necessary to meet short and long-range professional and artistic goals. Our current business incubator space is occupied by Cosmic Doghouse Press independent publisher that specializes in risograph printing, zines, and book making.

Ben Wigfall & Communications Village

The Neighborhood Print Studio is inspired and motivated by the art, activism and legacy of Ben Wigfall (1930-2017), a highly influential figure in the African-American and art communities of Kingston and Ulster County. Wigfall was the first African American professor at SUNY New Paltz and a renowned Kingston community leader who created Communications Village in Kingston’s Ponckhockie neighborhood, a community art space where he sought “a new and contemporary relationship between artists and community.” As both a maker and a mentor, Wigfall introduced the community to the power and value of art in their lives—an idea central to our own mission.

The Neighborhood Print Shop serves as a continuation of Wigfall’s efforts to provide both mentorship and art-making opportunities for the Kingston community, modeling art as a uniting force, a tool for activism and creative expression, and a pathway toward collaboration and new opportunities.

Our First Steamroller Event!

In August 2023, after a month of being open and six weeks of hard work, local artists and the Kingston community have made over 30 linocut artworks during the third annual DRAW-A-Thon Street Block party.
